Lilyan R.'s Story

Lily loves fashion, swimming, Disney World , riding her adaptive bike and cheerleading! She has trained for competition cheer with Showtime Elite Atlanta in the cheerABILITIES division and travels to several competitions each year to perform. She is a delightful little girl that wears her smile nearly every minute of the day. She loves people and being the center of attention and it is impossible to be near Lily without immediately recognizing her charm and being drawn into her world. As much as she enjoys interacting with the community, she does it without saying a word. As a nonverbal autistic person, Lily does not yet have language skills but she has found many other ways to be heard, loud and clear.

When Lily was a baby it was clear that she was not able to meet developmental milestones from the get go and began receiving early intervention at 9 months old. She was officially diagnosed with profound autism at 2 and has been receiving intense therapy since with the hopes of gaining the life skills that most people take for granted.

Like many autistic children, Lily suffers from low muscle tone and extreme developmental delays but the daily therapy she receives from a team of therapists at Hearts and Hands of Woodstock have helped her skills improve by leaps and bounds. Lily spends a good amount of her time working hard so we make sure she gets opportunities to play hard too. She loves to start the weekend eating at her favorite Mexican restaurant where she has been known to polish off a bowl of tortilla chip before her quesadilla even gets to the table . She loves to shop and explore the out doors and is an avid music fan so we are always looking for family friendly events in our community and surrounding areas. Lily uses the skills she has learned over the years which allow us to find ways to include her in activities that can be difficult for autistic people. It’s hard to tell Lily’s story in just a few sentences because she is full of so much wonder and delight. If I had to sum it up in a few words, this would say it all- Lily truly living her best life with the help of everyone she meets and she makes your life better for it.
