One frustrating yet common issue that homeowners experience is a leaky bathtub. Because this problem occurs so often, many people assume it’s easy to fix and might put off repairs. But is it really a simple fix? Or is there cause for concern?

A Leaky Bathtub May Indicate a Bigger Problem

While a bathtub’s inability to hold water might be a simple fix, this isn’t always the case. In some instances, a leaky bathtub may signal an underlying issue with your plumbing. If the problem is ignored, it may lead to more costly damage down the road. Let’s explore the most common reasons your tub might be leaking and how you can fix it.

Common Reasons Why Your Bathtub Won’t Hold Water

Issues With Your Drain Stopper

Problems with your drain stopper and its inability to form a proper suction may be the reason why your bathtub isn't able to hold water. These issues are relatively easy to fix and shouldn't warrant any concern if the tub is able to retain water following an adjustment.

Some common issues include:

  • Improper size – If the drain stopper is too small or big, it will allow water to slowly drain from the tub. Using a drain stopper with the correct fit will solve the problem.
  • Damaged/dirty stopper – A worn-out or damaged stopper may prevent suction from occurring. Similarly, a dirty stopper that's filled with soap scum or hair could prevent a seal from forming, causing water to drain. Replacing an old stopper or cleaning your current one may help restore the seal.
  • Bent/tangled linkage – Bent or damaged drain stopper linkage may prevent a seal from forming. A bent linkage may be gently straightened. However, a broken one will have to be replaced to restore suction.

Corroded Drain or Worn-Out Gasket

A corroded or damaged drain might be the reason why your drain stopper can't develop a strong seal. If you notice rust or bits of material flaking, it's likely your drain needs to be replaced. Fortunately, bathtub drains are fairly easy to replace yourself and typically don’t require a plumber. If your drain is in good shape, then your gasket may be the culprit.

Gaskets are the rubber pieces that form a seal between the drain and the bathtub. Luckily, these rubber seals are easy to replace. While drains and gaskets are easily replaceable, it is always recommended that you have a plumber come out and inspect your plumbing to ensure there aren’t any underlying problems.

Problems That Require Professional Plumbers

Leaks Resulting From Damage

Cracking, chipping or staining could indicate that water is leaking from the tub. If this is the case, you should contact a plumber immediately to address the situation before it becomes worse. If left untreated, a leak can cause mold growth and water damage.

Mold can cause respiratory issues while water damage can weaken the surrounding drywall and wood, possibly leading to foundational issues. Additionally, your water bill may increase as a result of ongoing damage.

Be on the Lookout for Signs of an Invisible Leak

A bathtub not being able to hold water may be the symptom of a bigger problem, like an invisible leak. The leaks occur under floors, behind walls or in underground pipes.

Other indicators of an invisible leak include:

  • High water bills
  • Low water pressure
  • Musty odors
  • Mold or mildew on the walls and ceilings
  • Water stains/dampness

It is incredibly important for homeowners to get a plumber out as soon as possible if they suspect an invisible leak is present. If mold and water damage continue to worsen, the repairs will be extensive and costly.
